With the rapid growth of technology applications in all aspects of business over the past decade, there has been a significant increase in computer-related fraud. At the same time, the use of electronic media in business has led to a massive explosion of digital documents, especially e-mail. As a result, fraud and misconduct investigations and litigation depend more and more on forensic technology tools and data analytic techniques.
KPMG provides forensic technology services on a global basis to help you conduct investigations and meet the challenges of e-discovery. KPMG’s Forensic Technology Services (FTS) team operates out of our 40,000 square foot facility in Orange County, California – Cypress Technology Center (CTEC) – which is staffed by systems and network engineers, database designers, software developers, litigation support personnel, and industry-focused professionals.
FTS focuses on the “5-P’s” that are critical to any data recovery or e-discovery effort: plan, preserve, pare, process, and produce.
The “planning” phase facilitates subsequent phases by identifying custodians and locations of data, estimating the magnitude of data, determining the best tools, and assembling a budget and action plan. “Preserving” recovers and duplicates potentially relevant and responsive data to prevent loss and establish a full “chain of custody.” “Paring” eliminates nonresponsive, duplicative, and irrelevant data by applying document analytic technologies. “Processing” mechanically or electronically prepares the corpus for production, often by converting documents to TIFF or PDF file formats. The “produce” phase uses discovery management software to review documents for privilege, redact privileged and/or confidential information, assign production numbers, and transfer documents to appropriate media for delivery to opposing parties. We offer specific services in each of the “P” categories.
