JCT Discussion of Tax Benefits for Higher Education
The Joint Committee on Taxation—a nonpartisan committee of the U.S. Congress that assists the majority and minority parties in both houses of Congress on tax legislation—has released a 47-page report that examines the tax benefits for higher education. The JCT discussion was prepared for a May 1st hearing of the Subcommittee on Select Revenue Measures of the Ways and Means Committee, which will focus on simplifying existing tax benefits relating to higher education and improving access to higher education.
The JCT report—Present Law and Analysis Relating to Tax Benefits for Higher Education (JCX-35-08, April 29, 2008)—looks at the tax benefits for individuals who incur higher education expenses and tax benefits relating to providers of higher education.
